Three things, none of which take long. Clear anything loose from around the outdoor unit, because in high wind loose objects become impacts against the coil and cabinet. Switch the system off at the breaker if a strike is imminent, since equipment is far more vulnerable to the voltage surge when power returns than to being off for a day.

Confirm the condenser is properly secured to its pad, which is a code requirement on coastal installations and worth checking on older equipment that may predate the current standard. Avoid wrapping the unit in plastic sheeting: trapped moisture against a coil does more harm over a season than a few hours of rain.

Before switching the system back on, look for debris packed against the condenser coil, any visible shift in the unit's position on its pad, and standing water around the equipment or the air handler.
